What do you take with you when you change web provider?

1 min read · Updated on

Before commissioning a website, ask how another provider would take it over. At Synila, we agree what will be handed over: the domain, hosting access, Git repository, data and documentation, according to the scope and rights agreed. A practical test is to ask someone who did not build the site to take it over.

Control also starts with the content. During an interview for a medical foot care website, the practitioner explained what she observes, what she tells her patients and what changes from one appointment to another. That gave us the material to design pages that explain her work. Another provider should be able to take that content forward with her.

When comparing a subscription with a site built for you, ask what can be exported, what rights you receive and what keeps working after the contract ends. Agree who will handle backups, updates and hosting after the handover.
